Here is a compact yet deep technical exploration of usage and programming of the new Metro end-user interface introduced by Windows Phone 7, 8, and 8.1.

This is the result of me stumbling around the internet, so would appreciate hearing from you about changes and additions.

Devices

There are two manufacturers of the Windows Phone: Nokia and HTC.

In the US, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon carry the devices. This table lists deep links into Windows Phone devices from each carrier:

Insert pauses in phone numbers in Contacts

I usually put participant numbers to conference calls as Pager.

On the Start screen, tap People.
Create a new contact, tap + (plus) or edit an existing phone details.
Type the digits to dial into the phone number box, and then press and hold the dot (period) key at the lower right of the keyboard. A pop up menu should appear.
- , comma - Pause about 2 seconds. For longer delays insert more pauses.
- ( open parenthesis - Area Codes
- ) close parenthesis - Area Codes
- X letter x - No Function
- . period
Press Save When you are finished.

Start Screen icons

First of all, that start screen needs a design decision.

I personally prefer small icons.

When an app is added, it appears as a large icon.

I press and hold, then tap the arrow to make the icon smaller.

To get all the icons smaller, in Settings | Start+theme, scroll down and set Show more Tiles to On.

While you're at it, select different color than red. Cyan is the HP corporate color.

Hardware buttons

First of all, that start screen.

Press the hardware left arrow to remove and exit the app.

Press the hardware Window key to temporarily return to the start screen of icons, so you can switch to another app.

Press and hold on the hardware left arrow to bring up apps in memory.

Press and hold on the hardware search key for Cortana (like Siri on iPhones).

Setup Apps

To bring back Bing QR Code Scan. just turn of the location service and Cortana will go away temporary and bring back Bing search when you are ready for Cortana Just turn on back your location Service and Bing QR will hide again.

Windows App Studio Beta released the 2014-2015 certificate required for sideloaded apps. needed to install the new certificate in order to use sideloaded App Studio apps on your Windows Phone.

To install the App Studio certificate on a Windows Phone:

On your Windows Phone device or scan QR code to https://appstudio.windows.com/job/getaet
Your Windows Phone will prompt you to sign in using the same Microsoft Account (LIVE ID) email you used to sign up for App Studio.
Download the file. Choose "open".
Double-tap to open the certificate.
You will be prompted to add a workplace/company account. Choose "add".

Windows Phone for Mac syncs media on Lumia/Windows phone to iTunes on a Mac laptop 10.8.4 and up. It does not allow just any file to be copied from a Finder window as with Microsoft Windows Explorer.
