Surface is the first time Microsoft has manufactured Windows hardware.
Unlike before, Surface is not made by
OEMs like ASUS, Acer, Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc.>
Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt expects Microsoft to move 3 million Surface units in 2012 and 9 million in 2013.
Microsoft Surface is a family of tablet hardware made by Microsoft.
At initial launch, there are two editions:
- Surface for WindowsRT (RunTime)> (Surface RT for short)
are powered by Nvidia’s 1.4GHz T30 Tegra 3 quad-core processor.
Its ARM (Advanced RISC Machine) architecture is also within Android and iOS devices,
due to lower power requirements,
which means smaller battery and thus a thinner, lighter case.
- Surface for Windows 8 Pro on Intel's x86 i5 Atom chips,
which were designed for power,
so can run desktop apps and drivers from Windows 7.
When comparing its $499 price versus competitors,
keep in mind the built-in kickstand and extra memory.
so you don't need to buy a cover.
2GB of memory in Surface RT is a significant advantage over its competition,
especially for heavy multi-tasking, Business Analytics, and gaming.
WARNING:
Windows 8 tablet apps
require screens of at least 1024 x 768 pixels.
In other words, the app won't launch on smart phones.
Plan for different form factors
since Phone 7 devices are 800x480 (WVGA) in landscape mode, and 480x800 in portrait mode.
BLAH: No 30fps when playing movies.
USB 2.0 support by Surface is a critical feature for most people - one noticably missing on other tablets.
BLAH: No USB 3.0?
Micro SD is helpful for exchanging data with smart phones (after opening its case).
BLAH: Toshiba Excite 10.1 is still the only slate with a full size SD card used on cameras and full-sized laptops.
All Windows RT devices comes with
Office Home and Student 2013 RT,
which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote.

Currently there is no cross-platform coding capability for Windows 8.

Unlike Apple and Google,
Microsoft has said it will not accept into its Windows App Store
"hybrid" apps whose only job is take the user into a browser
as soon as it opens. This is so it gets into the Windows App Store.

But 64-bit editions of Windows 8/RT can have different amounts of memory.
